Abstract:
En Mauritanie, l'ouverture du pays sur le monde extérieur et les changements de mode de vie ont, dans les années 1970, fait émerger une nouvelle variété d'arabe, intermédiaire entre le dialecte Hassaaniyya et l'arabe littéraire. Dans les prêches de Muhammad O. Sidi Yahya, qui s'adressent à un public très populaire, les trois variétés d'arabe sont utilisées. Entre le dialecte et l'arabe standard, il s'agit nettement de phénomènes d'alternance codique. Quant à l'arabe médian, qui apparaît fondamentalement comme une forme mixte basée sur le ḥassaaniyya, il tend à jouer le rôle de code neutre, facilitant la commutation entre les deux pôles extrêmes — ce qui donne parfois l'impression d'un continuum linguistique —. Dans ses prêches, O. Sidi Yahya exploite les potentialités des différentes variétés linguistiques, de leurs complémentarités et de leurs oppositions. Ses réalisations linguistiques varient au gré des nécessités de la communication, mais aussi en fonction d'une stratégie discursive personnelle qui se révèle très efficace.
