Servicio de Publicaciones, 2005 Abstract: Este trabajo se ofrece como reflexión previa al complejo ejercicio que supone la traducción al español de las peculiaridades estilísticas de la obra de Henry Fielding en general, y más concretamente de “Joseph Andrews”. De ahí la atención que se presta a las dificultades que plantean algunas de las marcas socio-lingüísticas de que Fielding se sirve para crear a algunos de los personajes de esta obra. Se concede especial atención a esa modalidad de solecismo que comúnmente se conoce como malapropismo y que Fielding utiliza como recurso cómico para caracterizar a personajes como Mrs. Slipslop, que pretende ascender en la escala social utilizando un léxico que va más allá de sus escasos conocimientos. Si no se lograran reproducir estos rasgos distintivos tan importantes en el perfil de este personaje se perdería una parte esencial no sólo de su caracterización sino también del marco retórico en que se encuadra la novela. ; This article offers a reflection on the particular stylistic characteristics of the works of Henry Fielding in general, and of “Joseph Andrews” in particular, in the light of the difficult exercise of translating the novel into Spanish. Hence attention is paid to the difficulties posed by some of the sociolinguistic traits used by Fielding in verbally delineating some of the characters in this work. More specifically, the article focuses on the type of solecism, commonly known as malapropism, that Fielding uses as a comic device to depict characters such as Mrs. Slipslop, whose attempt to rise in society is reflected in the use of a lexis that she does not master completely.
