Polotsky., The Israël National Academy of Sciences, Jerusalem, pp.499-530, 2009 (2009) Abstract: The paper shows the inadequacy of the structuralist method with its climax in generative grammar method when applied to our understanding of langauge. It shows the adequation of the cognitive, typological and functional approach. based on croslinguistically empirical data, i show the intrinsically human nature of language, which distinguishes it from other communication sysrtemss, viz. animal, computer and artificial ones,. Points treated in some detail are : Iconicity, Deixis, Multiple encoding, Bi- (not tri-) phonematicity of the Semitic root, the essential Bipartition of the utterance (not necessarily sentence) into [topic and] focus (not subject and predicate), Into-prosody and language's fidelity to sensorial data including those refuted by reason, The conclusion is that it is biology, not mathematics, which is best adapted to the study of language, since iot is a biologically evolutive and dynamical phenomenon, not a mathematical one. ; L'article montre les carences de l'approche structuraliste, dont l'aboutissement et la grammaire générative, et la pertinence de l'approche cognitive, typologique et fonctionnelle du langage. Son passés en revue avec force données empiriques la Nature intrinsèquement humaine du langage qui reflète celle de ses locuteurs, à la différence des systèmes de communication animale, informatique et artificielle, l'Iconicité, la Deixis, la Bi (et non tri-) phonématisme de la racine sémitique, le Codage multiple, la Bi-partition essentielle de l'énoncé en (thème et) rhème et non en sujet-prédicat, la Nature de l'Into-prosodie, la Fidélité du langage aux données sensorielles y compris celles démenties par la raison. La conclusion est que ce ne sont pas les mathématiques mais la biologie qui est la mieux armée pour saisir la nature, l'émergence et le fonctionnement du langage.
