Abstract:
In Arabic, especially in dialects, cases of grammaticalization of verbs are extremely common. They are used to express time / aspectual / modal values, which often characterize dialectal areas more or less extended. We studied the grammaticalization of a verb which originally had the sense of 'to see'. This meaning is preserved in literary Arabic (where its pattern is rāˀa) and a number of modern dialects, but the word most commonly in use in this sense is now šāf. The replacement of the first word by the former is an important question for the history of dialects (Ferguson 1959, Cohen 1962, Kaye 1976). But at the same time there is another question to be asked about the grammaticalized uses of ṛa(a). When followed by an affixed pronoun, it was observed that it is often used in North Africa to introduce sentences like original demonstrative particles (Fischer 1959). The article first summarizes the studies of Moroccan and Algerian Arabic, where the phenomenon is well (but differently) developed as enunciative particle. It then shows that the grammaticalized uses of ṛa(a) are not limited to the western part of North Africa, or even the only Maghreb, especially if one considers the forms in (a)raˤ(a/i), whose origin is controversial. A remarkable variety of patterns and values is observed through the whole area dialect. This diversity of evolutions is very interesting to analyse, both for the study of the phenomena of grammaticalization and for the history of Arabic dialects of Africa. ; En arabe, en particulier dans les dialectes, les cas de grammaticalisation de verbes sont extrêmement fréquents. Ils servent à l'expression de valeurs temporelles, aspectuelles ou modales qui, souvent, caractérisent des aires dialectales plus ou moins étendues. Nous nous intéressons ici à la grammaticalisation d'un verbe qui, à l'origine, avait le sens de 'voir'. Ce sens s'est conservé dans l'arabe littéraire (où il a pour forme rāʔa) et dans un certain nombre de dialectes modernes, mais le verbe le plus fréquemment usité en ce sens est maintenant šāf. La question posée par le remplacement d'un verbe par l'autre est importante pour l'histoire des dialectes (Ferguson 1959, Cohen 1962, Kaye 1976). Mais parallèlement se pose la question des emplois grammaticalisés de ṛa(a). Lorsqu'il est suivi d'un pronom affixe, on a observé en effet qu'au Maghreb il sert souvent à introduire des propositions, comme les particules d'origine démonstrative (Fischer 1959). L'article propose d'abord une synthèse des études faites sur l'arabe marocain et l'arabe algérien, où le phénomène connaît un développement notoire (mais diversifiée) comme particule énonciative. Il montre ensuite que les emplois ne se limitent pas à cette partie occidentale du Maghreb, ni même au seul Maghreb, surtout si l'on prend en considération les formes en (a)raˤ(a/i), à l'origine discutée. Une variété remarquable des formes et des valeurs est observée à travers l'ensemble du domaine dialectal. Elle présente un intérêt certain, à la fois pour l'étude des phénomènes de grammaticalisation et pour l'histoire des dialectes arabes d'Afrique.
