Abstract:
As a rising power for the past 30 years, China has had mounting participations in the international community and increasing exposures in the global media. Meanwhile, the Middle Kingdom is eager than ever to know in what ways other people are thinking of the Chinese and world affairs, with special care about its own image in the foreign news. For most Chinese audience with limited linguistic skills and media accesses, there is accordingly increased availability of translated-edited news from overseas on the one hand, and more elaborated symphony of framing, priming, selecting, and rearranging in news translation on the other hand. In this paper, the factors affecting the news translation in China will be examined at the global, national, organizational, and professional levels. At global level, factors of foreign policy, national interest and ideology will be analysed. At national level, party line is considered the bottom line in the translation and edition of international news. At organizational level, the different media agencies will adopt variable strategies in international news translation. At professional level, professionalism is employed to ensure the certainty in the final products of news translation. Based on the four levels, the paper takes an effort to construct how the reflections of the country according to the original, English news turn into the one according to the translated, Chinese news
