The Dorothy I. Height Center for Health Equity and Evaluation Research (CHEER)

Abstract:
The current award was designed to provide infrastructure support for the former Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH), now the Dorothy I. Height Center for Health Equity and Evaluation Research (CHEER). The ongoing CRMH/CHEER projects not only include research in Hispanic and Latino populations, but also other men and women of all ages and racial/ethnic groups. The broad reach of the CRMH/CHEER continues our commitment to improving health outcomes for underserved populations. In addition to providing infrastructure/ research support for the CRMH/CHEER, the adaption of the informed decision making aid Testing for Prostate Cancer into a culturally and linguistically appropriate tool for Hispanic men was initiated. In the proposed study, we conducted focus groups to evaluated the acceptance and feasibility of a community- based informed decision-making (IDM) aid specifically tailored for Hispanic men. The proposed decision making aid was adapted from the currently available American Cancer Society (ACS) Testing for Prostate Cancer booklet and slide set. The pilot project employed formative research processes including literature reviews plus thematic analysis of focus groups. We hypothesized that: 1) Hispanic men in the target populations would report favorable responses to the proposed culturally/linguistically-tailored prostate cancer screening tool, and 2) the proposed IDM tool would increase knowledge regarding the advantages and disadvantages of prostate cancer screening among Hispanic men in the target population. ; The original document contains color images.
