The new language paradigm, which, based on the methods of historical and comparative grammar, unveiled the connections between Indo-European languages and traced their evolution, did not come to Spain until well into the nineteenth century. At that time, Spanish universities were not very receptive to European scientific movements as far as the humanities were concerned. The lack of a trade that could ensure career opportunities for students placed the School of Philosophy and Letters in the minor league, performing preparatory tasks for ‘major’ courses (Law, Theology, Medicine, and so on). Moreover, the education authority had low expectations about the newly established school, as the knowledge taught was very abstract and often clashed with the principles of the Catholic Church. As a result, innovation and modernization were not encouraged, and the scientific changes taking place in other European countries failed to reach the Spanish academia. ; En este artículo pretendemos hacer una revisión de la enseñanza de la literatura y la lengua en la universidad española del siglo XIX a partir del estudio de la facultad de Filosofía y Letras. El nuevo paradigma lingüístico basado en la gramática comparada e histórica, como método que permite establecer los vínculos existentes entre las distintas lenguas indoeuropeas y reconstruir así sus etapas evolutivas, no llega a España hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX. La universidad española no facilitó la recepción de los movimientos científicos surgidos en Europa. La ausencia de una profesión que asegurase el futuro de los que estudiaban en ella la relegó a la condición de “facultad menor” cuya principal misión era la de servir de preparación a las “mayores” (Derecho, Teología y Medicina).
