Spanish in the United States : Varieties, Convergence and the Implications for the Court Interpreter

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to demonstrate the failure of the current language and interpreter training for court interpreters, and the need to address this problem. Most training materials are developed in the southwest of the United States where Mexican Spanish dominates. It is inadequate for interpreters in the Northeast where the majority of the Spanish speakers are Caribbean and, to a lesser extent, Mexican. This thesis explains the complexities of language, languages in contact and how the interpreter needs foundational and continued training in order to provide an accurate interpretation. In order to explain the changes that languages undergo when in contact, this thesis gives a brief history of the Spanish language, from inception to present day and analyzes the phonetic, lexical, morphological and syntactical differences in the varieties of Spanish spoken in the United States. Current professional standards for court interpreters are reluctant to accept changes that result from languages in contact. This research demonstrates that the linguistic processes the Spanish language is currently going through in the United States are similar to the linguistic processes that occurred when Latin evolved into Spanish centuries ago. Additionally, it demonstrates the need for professional standards to address the evolution of the language on a timely basis. In order for aspiring interpreters to achieve educated native like dominance in both languages more training is needed. It must be separate, depending upon native language, available throughout the country, tailored to levels of experience (aspiring, novice, experienced) and needs to teach all registers of language by dialect. There is a general lack of understanding and appreciation for the profession and the finely tuned skill set needed by interpreters.
