Japanese language Community of Practice: The learning process and personal development of a Japanese language learner.
Shimasaki, Kaori, Humanities, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW. - : University of New South Wales. Humanities, 2014
Abstract: This research first aims to enhance our understanding of language learning processes in Communities of Practice (CoP). CoPs are defined as "groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an on-going basis" (Wenger et al. 2002: p. 4). Lave and Wenger's Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP) (1991) considers the learning process as identity development through participation in a CoP. Lave and Wenger (1991) and Wenger (2000, 2012) argue that the individual learning process influences the development of a CoP. The second aim is to contribute to the concepts of CoP and LPP by addressing shortfalls identified through the literature review and the analysis for the first aim of the research.Data was collected in a university student organisation related to the Japanese language and culture, a CoP for students with interests in Japanese language and culture, with a particular emphasis on one participant, through participant observations; voice and video recordings of the events, and semi-structured interviews. The analysis shows that the language learning process is the participant's engagement process in a CoP, which is two directional multiple interplays between his personal experiences and the competences that the CoP values, and this engagement plays an important role in development of both the participant and the competences in the CoP. CoPs develop as they manage work plans, while he finds his own devices to cope with the difficulties that the work plans might impose upon him. This research contributes to the concepts of CoP and LPP by redefining CoP as it encompasses its function of offering context for learning. It suggests to consider the CoP learning process as the identity development through the interactions between ideal and actual selves (Higgins, 1987, 1996), proposes a new concept, Overlapped Broad Interface zone (OBI zone), which reinforces the concept of peripheral participation. It also reveals that the individual learning process and the CoP development work together effectively by using a mediation in a micro-meso-macro loop.
