Milkiyaton et Rašap : une relation stratégique
In: ISSN: 2031-5937 ; Semitica et Classica ; https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-01118240 ; Semitica et Classica, Brepols Publishers, 2014, 7, pp.77-95. ⟨10.1484/J.SEC.5.103519⟩ (2014)
Abstract: International audience ; The god Rašap, virtually absent from Phoenician sources from Phoenicia proper, held an eminent place in the pantheon of Kition and Idalion after the accession of Milkiyaton to the throne at the beginning of the 4th century BC. During this period, the cult of Rašap and, in particular, that of Rašap mkl became prosperous. The bilingual inscription in Phoenician and Syllabic Cypriot, carved on the base of a statue, bears a dedication to Rašap mkl; in the Syllabic Cypriot version the dedication is addressed to the warrior “Apollo of Amyκles”, Ἀπόλ(λ)ωνι τῷ Ἀμύκλωι, whose image was widely κnown in Laconia.Characterized as “Master of strength” or “Powerful master”, Rašap mkl maintained a unique relationship with the King Milkiyaton. The importance of Rašap in the pantheon of Kition and Idalion, as well as his identification with Apollo are certainly not the result of random chance, but instead reflect the implementation of a regional, even specifically political strategy of the King Milkiyaton.
