Abstract:
; `titrebLanguages and identities in an exolingustic milieu : three French-Ethiopian couples in Addis-Abeba talk`/titreb This sociolinguistic study of the discourse of three French-Ethiopian couples approaches individual bilingualism as social praxis. The verbal interactions of the six interviewees are marked by asymmetrical language repertoires and by the plurality of languages and cultures involved : after having met their partner in English, they lead their lives today mainly in French, a language that remains marginal in Ethiopia. The fact that languages are seen as ethnic attributes in the urban and multilingual context of Addis-Abeba allowed us to identify a certain number of elements at stake for our six informers when “building their couple” and use their biographical narratives to analyze their linguistic interactions. Exolingualism obliges them to resort to communication strategies which are specific in that they are both a source of linguistic insecurity for each individual and a way of fortifying the couple’s relationship. Results show that when interviewees speak about situations where their linguistic competence is minimal, their discourse usually refers to each partner's identities and cultures. But when they talk about situations where their linguistic asymmetry is less apparent, they concentrate more on making themselves understood. Distinctive language practices appear according to the value attached to the notions of face and diversity that participate in building identities whose co-herence is precisely defined by their mixedness.
