Abstract:
George Gopalâ talks about kite fishing, sitting on a bench in Tängä village ; The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015. ; George Gopalâ talks about the traditional technique of catching needlefish/garfish by means of a spider-silk lure which is hung from a kite so that it skims along the surface of the sea. When the fish bites, its many small teeth get caught in the spider silk and the fish can be caught. ; Åshild Næss is recording. George Gopalâ is speaking. The recording was transcribed by Philip Paikai and Åshild Næss. ; The field researcher leading the project and managing the recording and transcription sessions. ; Aka Tumwä Mongätea. Does not know his date of birth, but was probably in his 70s in 2015. From Tängä, married to a woman from Malapu (Janet Stemaa). ; From Otabwe, married to a woman from Ngadeli. Lived in Honiara from 1974 to 2006, working in the police force from 1980. Has been living on Ngadeli since 2010.
