Addressing the Challenge of Family Involvement in the Schooling of English Language Learners in Elementary and Secondary School Settings
Baker, Dorothy A. (Dorothy Anna), 1981-. - : Central Connecticut State University, 2015
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to identify, discuss, and codify, for practitioners and families, factors in the literature on English language earners that are significant in successfully addressing the challenge of achieving greater family involvement in the schooling of English language learners in elementary and secondary school settings. Specifically, this thesis identifies the elements that need to be in place in order to improve family involvement in the schooling of English language learners. The most recent census data, as reported by Ryan (2013), shows a 158.2% increase, since 1980, in the number of people speaking a language other than English at home in the United States. As this population of English language learners continues to grow and these students enter public schools, the sometimes-challenging experience of effective communication between school and home presents itself to schools, districts, families, and community members. ; "Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Educational Studies."; Thesis advisor: Daniel Mulcahy.; M.S.,Central Connecticut State University,,2015.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 96-108).
