Interview with Dr Damon Thomas
Thomas, DP. - : ABC Radio Launceston, 2015
Abstract: Interview with Dr. Damon Thomas, Lecturer on English Education, University of Tasmania, about literacy. Gillman says that common assumptions about numeracy and literacy will be scrutinised in a public symposium to be held at the Cradle Coast campus of UTAS. Thomas says that the NAPLAN tests have had a profound impact on Australian education since 2008. At the symposium, Thomas says he will be speaking about the tests, and the emphasise given to the tests. He says that some teachers start preparing 5 months before the tests and this causes student anxiety. He says that his research shows that spending weeks preparing does not necessarily give a good account for a successful test. Thomas says that the concept of literacy is different these days and says that people need to be able to interpret multimodal texts, such as symbols, images, and gestures. Thomas says that parents have to also prepare their children for school.
