Comprendre des textes en français langue seconde : l'influence du profil linguistique du lecteur

Abstract: This study investigates the impact of the reader's linguistic profile on reading comprehension in French as a second language. In a French learning center, 23 foreign students were asked to work on a set of four texts that treated the same topic. All the participants had an advanced level in French as a second language, but some of them had a Romance linguistic profile since they were proficient in one or more Romance languages next to French. The participants carried out comprehension tasks in two experimental conditions. In both conditions, text comprehension by readers with a Romance profile tends to be better. The role of the mother tongue, English as a bridge language, and the number of known Romance languages are also discussed. To conclude, pedagogical implications of the study highlight the relevance of multilingual approaches that take advantage of links between Romance languages.
