Plusieurs auteurs ouvrent le discours identitaire à une américanité qui se définit moins comme l’assimilation culturelle de la minorité francophone à un mode de vie étatsunien que comme l’expression d’une expérience continentale fondatrice. Dans la littérature acadienne, ce phénomène de réinvestissement de la mémoire continentale correspond à un désir de rompre avec une identité fondée sur des lieux communs inhérents à une mythologie continentale qui a longtemps confiné l’Acadie à une image relevant davantage d’une blessure historique que d’une présence active au sein d’une quelconque américanité. Menant une analyse du roman Vortex de Jean Babineau, cet article étudie la transformation du soi dans son rapport identitaire à l’espace américain et examine comment les transformations vécues sur le plan individuel participent à la recomposition de la figure de l’Acadien à partir de l’expérience proprement acadienne de l’Amérique. ; French language literatures in Canada have moved to reinvest the American space and its imagination. Many authors expand identity discourses to an americanness defined less as the cultural assimilation of francophone minorities to the American way of life and more as the expression of a founding continental experience. In Acadian literature, this reinvestment of continental memory corresponds with a desire to break away from an identity based on commonplace narratives of a continental mythology that had long confined Acadie to an image belonging more to historical wounds than to an active presence within any type of americanness. Carrying an analysis of Vortex, a novel by Jean Babineau, this article studies the transformation of self in relationship with America as an identitary space and examines how modifications lived on an individual level contribute to the redefinition of the figure of the Acadian through a distinctly Acadian experience of America.
