Brunot 1909). In addition, there was a diglossia between oral and written language. During the Great War, the ’ordinary’ French citizens put pen to paper. Their written productions offer linguists an observatory of the language use from below and pave the way for the first systematic studies of the spoken language use in France. The best known among these studies is certainly Henri Frei’s La Grammaire des fautes (1929), which shows through ”faults, innovations, slang, unusual or disputed cases and grammatical confusion” that the non-standard language follows systematic rules, even if these rules do not conform to the prescriptive norms (p. 32). In comparison, Henri Bauche (1920) gives a picture of the Parisian language variety used by the lower classes of society during the same period. The diversity of the empirical data of these studies allows a review of the transposition of spoken to written language in a society in which citizens have been able to benefit from generalised schooling, but, in addition, makes it also possible to re-examine the function of the written language and the grammaticised norms according to professional linguists. ; À la veille et encore au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, prévalait en France une triple diglossie – celle entre les langues régionales et le français, celle entre un dialecte et la langue standard et celle entre un français parlé « corrompu » et un français parlé correct (Brunot 1909). À cela s’ajoute la diglossie entre l’oral et l’écrit. Au cours de la Grande guerre, les Français « ordinaires » prennent la plume. Leurs écrits offrent aux linguistes un observatoire du langage au ras-du-sol et fraient la voie aux premières recherches systématiques de la langue parlée en France. La plus connue d’entre elles est sans doute la Grammaire des fautes (1929) d’Henri Frei qui montre à travers les « fautes, innovations, argot, cas insolites ou litigieux [et] perplexités grammaticales » que la langue non standard obéit aux règles systématiques même si elles ne sont pas celles de la norme prescriptive (p. 32). En comparaison, Henri Bauche (1920) fournit une image du langage parisien des « basses couches » de la société de la même époque. L’abondance des sources empiriques de ces ouvrages permet non seulement d’examiner la transposition à l’écrit de la parole dans une société où tous les citoyens ont pu bénéficier de la scolarisation généralisée, mais permet aussi de conclure quel est le rôle de l’écrit et de la norme grammatisée selon les professionnels de la langue.
