Abstract:
Spanish Through the Arts is a proposal of a class for level III in Public Schools. In this class, students will learn both the Spanish language and culture through music, visual arts and cinema. They will have the opportunity to develop an appreciation for the larger contributions of Spanish and Latin American cultures to the world, at the same time as they advance in their knowledge of Spanish language. In visual arts, students will explore the different artistic movements of Latin America and Spain. They will develop reading skills by reading the biographies, and speaking and writing skills by talking and writing about the different narratives in the paintings as well as their appreciation of the visual arts. Through Spanish and Latin American music, students will expand their knowledge of vocabulary, language usages and structures. They will learn colloquial expressions and local idioms from the different Spanish speaking countries at the same time as they will develop their listening and oral abilities with emphasis in rhythm, intonation and pronunciation. Through the history of music, students will develop an appreciation for the contributions and influence that Hispanics musicians have made to their countries and to the world. Finally, through cinema, students will learn about cultural, social and historical events of Latin America and Spain through their films. Conversation and discussion are encouraged to raise a critical view of social and political events in Spain and Latin America. This class pretends to develop an engaging and motivating curriculum where students will develop linguistic competence using visual arts as the curriculum framework.
