Abstract:
; Due to a long history of fostering monolingualism in Brazil, language policies that take into account the present minority languages are still recent here. Particularly the so called immigration languages still suffer a lot of prejudice, because they don’t find their space in this scenario that is not recognized as multilingual – although it in fact always have been multilingual. Thus, the process of losing/shifting these languages may be being accelerated, and the public policies don’t do very much to reverse this situation. In this paper we discuss the situation of Brazilian multilingualism, focusing on minority languages, especially the Hunsrückisch, a Brazilian immigration/heritage language of German base, which is spoken preeminently in Rio Grande do Sul. We show here some actions that we have developed within our research projects, which aims to contribute to the maintenance of this minority language, combating linguistic discrimination and negative attitudes towards it, as well as allowing it in the school and legitimizing it as a bridge language for the standard German learning.
