In: JEP 2016 ; https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01452974 ; JEP 2016, Aug 2016, Paris, France (2016)
Abstract: International audience ; This paper compares acoustic properties of Romanian vowels in continuous vs laboratory speech. We aim to : (1) describe acoustic features of Romanian vowels as function of the speaking style ;(2) estimate the impact of speaking style on language-specific phonemic contrasts ; (3) correlateacoustic properties of central vowels [2] and [1] in continous speech with their phonemic status. Re-sults show that while phonologically the central vowels have different representations, this contrast isseverely diminshed in continous speech, leading to a phonetic near-merger. The phonological compe-tence is not realized in continuous speech, where performance permits considerable overlap amongcentral vowels. The vowels’ nearly complementary distribution circumvents intelligibility loss. Theresults provide support to the hypothesis of gradient (instead of categorical) and marginal phonemiccontrast (Goldsmith, 1995; Scobbie & Stuart-Smith, 2008; Hall, 2013).
