Languages and Dialects in the Digital Library North
Abstract: The Digital Library North is being developed jointly by the Inuvialuit Cultural Resource Centre and the University of Alberta. The goal is to create a digital library that will meet the needs of the Inuvialuit people. The Inuivialuit people recognize three dialects of the Inuvialuktun language: Siglitun, Uummarmiutun and Kangiryuarmiutun, all of which are currently in use. One of the goals of the Digital Library North is to supply access to materials through metadata created in all three dialects. While Siglitun and Uummarmiutun are understood as dialects of Inuvialuktun, Kangiryuarmiutun, is also known as Inuinnaqtun, is considered in some areas to be both a dialect of Inuvialuktun and Inuktituit. Inuinnaqtun is has been recognized with its own language code Ikt, however no codes exist for Siglitun , Uummarmiutun and Inuvialkutun. This poster demonstratesthe current use of the three dialects in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, efforts to establish language codes for all of the dialects, and next steps in building a digital library interface that will be searchable in all of the dialects.
