Abstract:
International audience ; Catherine Miller is a sociolinguist and director of research at the CNRS. Born in 1955, trained in ethnology and linguistics, she has worked on the phenomena of linguistic contact in the Arab world, first in South Sudan and then in Egypt. From 2008, she continued her research in Morocco during a four-year research stay at the Centre Jacques Berque in Rabat. Between 2015 and 2017 she directed the Institute for Research and Studies on the Arab and Muslim World (IREMAM, Aix-en-Provence).In this interview conducted by François Siino and Myriam Catusse (as part of a dossier of the Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée entitled "Are “the Arab revolutions” an event for Social Sciences?"), Catherine Miller discusses the Arab revolutions as they have been perceived through the disciplinary prism of sociolinguistics, particularly in the Moroccan context. She explains how the period of the revolutions first of all made visible a pre-existing plurilingualism (classical Arabic, dialectal, Amazigh, French, English), known to specialists, but until then little displayed in the public sphere, which contributed to making this type of research object more legitimate. As a result, new directions of research are developing, albeit slowly: Moroccan Arabic as a possible language of instruction and debate, linguistic uses in the media (soap operas, reality shows, etc.) and social networks. The study of written productions also complements that of oral language practices, and countries traditionally considered as the "guardians" of classical Arabic (notably the Gulf States) are beginning to organise conferences on contemporary Arabic speakers, or even on pidgin Arabic. ; Catherine Miller est sociolinguiste et directrice de recherche au CNRS. Née en 1955, formée à l’ethnologie et à la linguistique, elle a notamment travaillé sur les phénomènes de contact linguistique dans le domaine arabe, d’abord au Sud Soudan puis en Égypte. À partir de 2008, elle a poursuivi ses recherches sur le terrain marocain lors d’un séjour de recherche de quatre ans au Centre Jacques Berque de Rabat. Elle a dirigé entre 2015 et 2017 l’Institut de recherches et d’études sur le monde arabe et musulman (IREMAM, Aix-en-Provence).Dans cet entretien réalisé par François Siino et Myriam Catusse (dans le cadre d’un dossier de la Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée intitulé « Révolutions arabes : un événement pour les sciences sociales ? »), Catherine Miller évoque les révolutions arabes telles qu’elles ont pu être perçues à travers le prisme disciplinaire de la sociolinguistique, notamment dans le contexte marocain. Elle explique comment la période des révolutions a tout d’abord rendu visible un plurilinguisme pré existant (arabe classique, dialectal, amazigh, français, anglais), connu des spécialistes, mais jusque là peu affiché dans la sphère publique, ce qui a contribué à rendre plus légitime ce type d’objet de recherche. Du coup, de nouvelles pistes de recherche se développent, quoique encore lentement : l’arabe marocain comme possible langue d’enseignement et de débat, les usages linguistiques dans les médias (feuilletons, téléréalité…) et les réseaux sociaux. L’étude des productions écrites vient aussi compléter celle des pratiques langagières orales, et des pays traditionnellement considérés comme les « gardiens » de l’arabe classique (notamment les pays du Golfe) commencent à organiser des conférences sur les parlers arabes contemporains, voir sur les pidgin arabic.
