The processing and comprehension of pronominal elements in Dutch as a second language
Abstract: This research examined how native speakers of German process reflexive and personal pronouns in their second language Dutch. The methods applied were reaction time and eyetracking. The results of the reaction time study show that reflexive pronouns in a co-argument structure like “John saw himself” are processed faster than personal pronouns in general. The eyetracking study could not replicate this result. The results of the studies did not suggest that language proficiency had an effect on the processing of pronominal elements. Moreover, the reaction time and eyetracking studies did not prove that reflexive pronouns in non-co-argument structures like “John put the pen next to himself” were processed faster than personal pronouns. In a third study, the comprehension of reflexive and personal pronouns in so-called picture noun phrases was examined. This study shows that cross-linguistic differences between German and Dutch native speakers exist.
