; The article explores the issue of intensification using data from English and Russian corpora. More specifically, it addresses the problems of the theoretical interpretation of the phenomenon in question as well as the grammatical status of adverbs referred to as intensifiers whose function is to reinforce the meaning of related adjectives. It examines the correlation between intensity and emotivity and suggests a classification of English and Russian emotive intensifiers. Special focus is placed on similarities and differences between English and Russian intensifying adverbs in terms of their ability to function as intensifiers and on searching for common bases for coining semantically motivated intensifiers in both languages. In this respect, 10 types of intensifiers related to the following conceptual frameworks have been identified: 1) psychological impact (affect) including conceptual subtypes of fear/horror, strong surprise or deep impression, sense of pity, shame or laughter; 2) physiological impact; 3) impact of a physical force; 4) large space and size; 5) large amount; 6) borders, limits; 7) transcendence of physical borders or borders of reality; 8) spontaneous force including unmanageable force, metaphysical force (demonic/Divine power) as well as reality as a force impacting humans; 9) patency, obviousness; 10) negative consequences of impacting force. The picture that emerges complements and elaborates on the premises proposed by Jing-Schmidt (2007), who claims that the realization of intensification in language is based on metaphoric and metonymic re-analyses of such affective states as fear, anger and disgust. The classification of English and Russian intensifiers proposed by the authors of the article enables us to infer deeper cognitive patterns for the linguistic expression of intensification of meaning. The article substantiates the idea that at the base of each identified type of intensifier is an underlying cognitive prototype of “force/power” which is actualized in a variety of ways at the surface-conceptual level of language. In some cases this prototype can be clearly visible in the semantic structure of the intensifiers (e. g. classes of affect, impact of physical force, spontaneous force), while in other cases additional analytical effort is required in order to elicit the prototype from the meaning of an intensifier and bring it to the level of reasoned awareness (e. g. classes of limits, transcendence of limits, patency). The authors conclude that work focusing on these cognitive mechanisms may prove to be valuable for cognitive science since they can shed more light on understanding the semantic architectonics of human cognition.
