Sociolinguistic Interview (Group 3) ; zag_soc20150913_g3
Abstract: In this session we conducted a group interview on sociolinguistic topics (the third of four). The two consultants (group of younger men: Mr. Abdalnasir Mohamad Khalil and Mr. Mahmoud Heri Nahar Abdalla) were presented questions by the research assistent Elsadig Omda Ibrahim Elnur as a stimulus for a free discussion. In particular the preparation and procedure in these sociolinguistic interviews was as follows: Before the meeting EOI had prepared the English questions (cf. list as pdf) in Arabic and in Zaghawa since the consultants discussed in Zaghawa (mixed with Arabic due to the complexity of the topic). On the day of the meeting some of the central topics were explained before the discussion. During the discussion and the recording itself the group got the questions read aloud by EOI (in Arabic or Zaghawa), but they conducted the discussion by themselves. EOI chaired the discussion e.g. in order to get back to questions that had not been touched on or to pass to another question, but with minimal intrusion. In the beginning this group of younger men was a little bit tense because of the time they spend away from their business. Later they got more relaxed. The recordings were translated as summaries in English by EOI (written down by LIC, see pdf).
