Abstract:
International audience ; The mining valleys of South Wales experienced unprecedented economic development during the industrialisation period in Great Britain (Lewis 1959, Hopkins 1974). Until the end of the 19th century, the mining valleys were still overwhelmingly Welsh-speaking. However, a mass influx of immigrants, mainly from the southwest of England, accelerated the anglicisation of the region. The English spoken in the mining valleys of South Wales was thus shaped by these various linguistic influences.The rapid transformation of the region inspired works by many Welsh writers, including Lewis Jones. In his social novel Cwmardy, Jones accurately described the harsh daily lives of the miners in the Rhondda Valley from the 1890s to the 1930s. To enhance the realism, he attempted to represent the miners’ dialect. Two registers are clearly contrasted in the novel, namely the informal register of the mining community and the formal register mainly mobilised by the elites (Le Dû and Le Berre, 1995).The informal register presented by Jones contains three recurrent constructions: the copula be in its uninflected form and the periphrastic forms be + V-ing and do + V-ing. These three forms are generally used in the novel to describe durative or iterative processes. While these constructions were certainly characteristic of the Anglo-Welsh vernacular, their contexts and frequencies of use do not seem as realistic as the sociohistorical context depicted. ; Les vallées minières du sud du Pays de Galles connurent un développement économique sans précédent durant la période d’industrialisation de la Grande‑Bretagne (Lewis 1959, Hopkins 1974). Jusqu’à la fin du XIXe siècle, les vallées minières étaient encore très majoritairement galloisantes. Néanmoins, l’afflux massif d’immigrants étrangers, principalement originaires du sud-ouest de l’Angleterre, accéléra l’anglicisation de la région. L’anglais parlé dans les vallées minières du sud du Pays de Galles fut alors façonné par ces diverses influences linguistiques.La transformation rapide de la région inspira de nombreux écrivains gallois. Lewis Jones fut l’un d’entre eux et décrivit avec justesse le dur quotidien des mineurs de la vallée de la Rhondda entre les années 1890 et 1930. Afin de donner plus de réalisme à son roman social intitulé Cwmardy, Lewis Jones tente de représenter le parler dialectal des mineurs de l’époque. Deux registres sont ainsi clairement mis en opposition dans le roman : le registre paritaire, celui de la communauté des mineurs, opposé au registre disparitaire, principalement maîtrisé par les élites (Le Dû et Le Berre, 1995).Trois constructions apparaissent de manière récurrente dans le roman Cwmardy : la copule be à la forme non fléchie ainsi que les formes périphrastiques be + V-ing et do. Ces trois formes sont généralement employées pour décrire des procès duratifs ou itératifs. Bien que ces constructions soient caractéristiques du vernaculaire anglo-gallois, les contextes et les fréquences d’emploi de ces formes ne semblent pas aussi réalistes que le contexte socio-historique dépeint par Lewis Jones dans son roman.
