Abstract:
Interview Questions used in November 2018 for 15 interviews. The set of questions listed below is the basic set used, developed with Kadagoi Rawad Forepiso and John Bogg. They were adapted during interviews as needed. Generally interviews were conducted by Danielle Barth although one short interview was conducted by a young local speaker. Two interviews had one respondent, two interviews had three interviewees and the rest had a pair of respondents. Section III has questions about clans and origins. Interviews 1-9 used the expression “malal hun” ‘origin place’ to talk about clans, but a speaker in interview 10 corrected the expression to “badim” for ‘clan’. Interviews 10-15, then, used the word “badim” and received different answers as a result. Interviews were conducted at a time when the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting had just finished in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Questions about people’s knowledge and expectations of APEC are in section IV. Also in this section are questions about the Banab bridge collapse. Banab bridge is located on the North Coast Highway, the main road from the Sepik region down to Lae. In March 2018, this bridge collapsed after a semi-trailer loaded with heavy machinery drove over the bridge. The bridge collapse site is about 2km from Matukar. Section VI includes questions about the traditional coming of age customs for boys and girls. Answers to these questions varied greatly. Traditionally this area did have men’s houses where boys went through coming of age trials and ceremonies. Traditionally, women aren’t allowed to talk about these but some female interview respondents did anyways. Some people had no knowledge of these customs or said they had stopped, but others insisted they still go on today for boys who choose to participate in them. Answers varied more widely about coming of age ceremonies for girls. Some women said that women went into a women’s house but did not give much detail. Some women chose instead to talk about what happens at a girl’s first menstruation, although details about what happens/what used to happen also varied. No male interviewees admitted to having knowledge of women’s coming of age practices. ; Matukar Panau is a highly endangered Oceanic language spoken near Madang, Papua New Guinea. Although most children are no longer learning Matukar Panau, current speakers (apx. 300) form a vibrant community of multilinguals in dense social networks. As an Oceanic language on the PNG coast, Matukar Panau has many interesting Papuan features. No language of this area has a large corpus available. This project aims to produce 47 hours of audio-visual recordings and a 200,000+ word corpus. Recordings will focus on conversations where participants are varied by age, gender, clan, social connections and differing language portfolios to document speaker interaction. Pairs of speakers will discuss life, customs, and family and will respond to stimuli-based activities. Transcription and translation of data into the PNG lingua franca, Tok Pisin, will be done with an existing trained local team.
