Abstract: This is an audio-video recording of a traditional myth called “Cadejo”. The Cadejo is well known myth through all Chiapas. The Cadejo is a big dog that only walks during nights and if you see it you can even die. If you see the Cadejo you stay in a possessed state, and you gradually get sick until you die if you do not get the right cure. Julio López Pérez narrates how in the old days when there was not electricity in Tuzantan people used to see the Cadejo more often. He tells us about one time his father saw an animal with a pork body, and that that animal the Cadejo. This pork converted to a kid’s body and he run away when he was seen by his father. He says that the shaman had the power to become an animal, and take the Cadejo’s form. He says that the Cadejo was the form that shamans used to take advantage of in order to scare people and hurt them. Since the Cadejo is an animal that bring illness to the person who sees it, they converted themselves into any animal to do witchcraft without touching the person. Thus they covered themselves under an animal’s body. ; A story of the Cadejo.
