Entre as consequências dessa mudança, muitas cidades, principalmente de países em desenvolvimento, passaram a presenciar aumentos nos níveis de pobreza, desemprego e situação de insegurança alimentar e nutricional. Nesse cenário, a denominada agricultura urbana e periurbana emergiu como estratégia para combater esses problemas. Entretanto, no aspecto conceitual, nesta pesquisa é problematizada a tendência da associação da agricultura ao termo urbano e periurbano definida pela localização. Assim, na busca de compreender essa expressão, realizamos aprofundamentos teóricos e pesquisa de campo, a partir da realidade social, com o objetivo de criticar a definição e a utilização da expressão agricultura urbana e periurbana como um marco conceitual que caracterizaria a produção agrícola que ocorre na cidade. A partir das considerações teóricas sobre o termo urbano, eventualmente utilizado como adjetivo da agricultura que ocorre na cidade, destacaram-se duas perspectivas: a nova ruralidade, através da abordagem territorial (não-setorial); e a urbanização completa da sociedade, através da abordagem dialética. Por um lado, diante do contexto atual brasileiro, a nova ruralidade não revela as contradições na realidade social após a modernidade levar para o campo a mesma forma de vida das cidades incluindo as relações de trabalho e de produção, além de tender a transformar o espaço rural em objeto de consumo. Por outro lado, a compreensão da urbanização como uma racionalidade urbana, cuja finalidade é a manutenção do capital, e que perpassa a sociedade de maneira hegemônica, nos possibilita expor as contradições e implicações resultantes dessa, a partir da (re)estruturação territorial e social. Com relação aos resultados da pesquisa de campo, a realidade social dos produtores agrícolas e membros da Associação de Agricultores da Zona Leste (AAZL) foi fundamental para exemplificar as reestruturações provocadas por essa racionalidade, representadas nas mudanças do uso do solo, com implicações negativas para os produtores que vivem da agricultura. Ao final da dissertação, concluímos que caracterizar a agricultura que ocorre na cidade como urbana e periurbana não seria adequado, considerando o uso do termo urbano inserido em uma racionalidade que se expressa tanto no campo como na cidade, portanto, não deve ser associado a uma localização específica. Ademais, o conhecimento do grupo de agricultoras e agricultores da AAZL nos possibilitou estudar, nas suas perspectivas, as relações estabelecidas através da propriedade e na propriedade, bem como as formas de comercialização e de condução de suas produções, compreendidas dentro de um contexto histórico e atreladas às dimensões política, econômica, social e ambiental. Os resultados também evidenciaram o quanto a agricultura na cidade é capaz de oferecer benefícios e sensações positivas, tanto para os produtores como para a sociedade do entorno. No entanto, para que esses efeitos continuem presentes na cidade será necessário iluminar a situação dos agricultores, e assim, promover as condições para que eles possam continuar revelando ao restante da sociedade, os benefícios derivados da agricultura na cidade ; In 2007, the global urban population exceeded the global rural population. Among the consequences of this change, many cities, especially in developing countries, have witnessed increases in the levels of poverty, unemployment and food and nutritional insecurity. In this scenario, the so-called urban and peri-urban agriculture emerged as a strategy to combat these problems. However, in the conceptual aspect, this research criticizes the tendency of the association of agriculture to the urban and peri-urban term defined by location. Thus, in the search to understand this expression, we carried out theoretical deepening and field research, based on social reality, in order to criticize the definition and use of the expression urban and peri-urban agriculture as a conceptual framework that would characterize the agricultural production that occurs in the city. Based on theoretical considerations about the term urban, eventually used as an adjective for agriculture that occurs in the city, two perspectives stood out: the new rurality, through the territorial (non-sectoral) approach; and the complete urbanization of society, through the dialectical approach. On the one hand, given the current Brazilian context, the new rurality does not reveal the contradictions in the social reality after modernity takes to the countryside the same way of life of cities including the relations of work and production, in addition to tending to transform space rural consumption. On the other hand, the understanding of urbanization as an urban rationality, whose purpose is the maintenance of capital, and which permeates society in a hegemonic way, allows us to expose the contradictions and implications resulting from this, from the territorial and social (re)structuring . With regard to the results of the field research, the social reality of agricultural producers and members of the Association of Farmers of the East Zone (AAZL) was fundamental to exemplify the restructuring caused by this rationality, represented in the changes in land use, with negative implications for producers who live off agriculture. At the end of the dissertation, we conclude that characterizing the agriculture that occurs in the city as urban and peri-urban would not be appropriate, considering the use of the term urban inserted in a rationality that is expressed both in the countryside and in the city, therefore, should not be associated with a specific location. Furthermore, the knowledge of AAZL's group of female farmers made it possible for us to study, from their perspectives, the relationships established through ownership and ownership, as well as the ways of marketing and conducting their production, understood within a historical and linked to the political, economic, social and environmental dimensions. The results also showed how much agriculture in the city is able to offer benefits and positive feelings, both for producers and for the surrounding society.
