Can prosody meet pragmatics? Case of discourse particles in French
In: ICPhS 2019 - International Congress of Phonetic Sciences ; https://hal.inria.fr/hal-02177202 ; ICPhS 2019 - International Congress of Phonetic Sciences, Aug 2019, Melbourne, Australia (2019)
Abstract: International audience ; The goal of this study is to investigate how prosodicparameters can contribute to retrieving the pragmaticmeaning of words with considerably diminishedsemantic content. The paper focuses on six Frenchwords used as discourse particles (DP): ‘alors’ (so),‘bon’ (well), ‘donc’ (thus), ‘enfin’ (finally/anyway),‘quoi’ (what), ‘voilà’ (there you go). Prosodicproperties of DPs are analysed with respect to theirpragmatic functions, using occurrences ofthese words extracted from a large speech corpus, andmanually annotated with pragmatic labels. It wasfound that occurrences with the same pragmatic valuehave a great tendency to share the same prosodicpattern; hence, the question of their commutabilityarises. An auditory test has thus been conducted tofind out whether DPs of uniform pragmatic functionsare perceived as commutable and how prosodicfeatures help listeners in identifying considered DPs.The results are analysed and discussed with respect topragmatic functions and prosodic patterns.
