Literalitätserwerb als Voraussetzung für Bildungserfolg?
Abstract:
; This work takes a closer look at the success in education of recently immigrated Syrian students with high academic goals. The basic assumption is that success in education is essentially driven by the acquisition of literacy. Guideline-based interviews were conducted with students from Syria who are aiming to graduate high school but are not yet in a higher secondary level, and had attended a regular class in Berlin before being interviewed. The results show that the students are aspiring for education and they are used to memorizing a lot. One example shows that a high level of literacy can be a factor for success in the continuing of a higher education goal. However, literacy in Syria and Germany is embedded in different social contexts. According to the descriptions, an occupation with the content of texts is neither wanted nor necessary. Exams are about the reproduction of content that was memorized beforehand. Therefore, a transfer of text competence from one language into the other is not possible. It also turns out that especially young people who immigrate from an age of 16 onwards are very disadvantaged while trying to continue a higher education they started before their arrival. It shows that the support of German in the welcome classes is not sufficient regarding the German competence needed in regular classes. The students interviewed say they are missing an element of sensitivity of teachers regarding their educational support needs and an appreciative motivating attitude. These experiences of discrimination could be reduced by mandatory diversity training for (future) teachers.
