Polydefinite Noun Phrases in Albanian Romani ; Les syntagmes nominaux polydéfinis en romani d'Albanie.

Abstract:
This dissertation is devoted to the study of nominal phrases with an articulated attributive adjective in Albanian Romani. This is the use of an “adjectival” definite article in the nominal phrase, recalling the polydefinite NPs or Determiner Spreading in Greek. It corresponds to the syntactic pattern kind of multiple determination in the typology of Alexiadou (2014), and to the type 1 languages in the typology of Lekakou and Szendrői (2012). It probably goes back to Early Romani, which means that all current Romani varieties once had it. It arises from contact with Greek through pattern replication (Matras 2009). In two fieldworks I conducted in Korça in 2013 and 2014, I collected a corpus of spontaneous and semi-spontaneous speech to combine qualitative and quantitative analysis. The structure is mainly used with predicative, restrictive and intersective adjectives, new in the information structure and postponed to the noun. The “nominal” determiner is the definite article, the possessive or demonstrative; the “adjectival” determiner is the definite article with the function of focalisation operator. The results show that polydefinite phrases are subject to “preferential constraints” (Thuilier 2012). The adjectival subpart of the phrase is an “indirect modification” (Cinque 2010) and the postnominal slot is a “post-zone” (Nølke 2001). Since it is the locus of internal focus, it has several functions: restrictive identification of the referent, contrast, emphasis, synthesis, topic-shift, nickname creation and “romanisation” of loanwords. The polydefinite phrases and the adjectival place undergo dialectal, diachronic, diagenic and diaphasic variation in Albanian Romani. I have observed that a change in the nominal constituent order has taken place or is ongoing. The inherited word order is D A N, while the new word order is D N A. The word order D N D A is an intermediate form and was used as a bridge from one to the other, as it is an ancient structure but with postposed adjective. For Albanian Romani we demonstrate that adjective postposition has become predominant for all nominal phrases. ; Cette thèse porte sur les syntagmes nominaux comportant un adjectif épithète articulé en romani d’Albanie. Ce phénomène consiste en l’ajout d’un article défini « adjectival » au sein du syntagme nominal et rappelle le polydefinite NP ou determiner spreading grec. Nous montrons qu’il correspond à la détermination multiple de type pattern syntaxique, selon la typologie d’Alexiadou (2014), et au type 1 des langues selon celle de Lekakou et Szendrői (2012). Cette structure remonte probablement au vieux romani, ce qui implique que toutes les variétés actuelles l’aient un jour connue. Elle provient du contact avec le grec par convergence de type pattern replication (Matras 2009). Pour étudier les syntagmes polydéfinis, nous avons réalisé deux missions de terrain à Korçë en 2013 et 2014, afin d’y recueillir un corpus à la fois spontané et semi-spontané, et de combiner analyse qualitative et quantitative. Ils s’emploient surtout avec des adjectifs prédicatifs, restrictifs et intersectifs, informationnellement nouveaux et placés après le nom. Le déterminant « nominal » est l’article défini, le possessif ou le démonstratif ; le déterminant « adjectival » est l’article défini qui joue un rôle d’opérateur de focalisation. Nos résultats montrent que les syntagmes polydéfinis font l’objet de « contraintes préférentielles » (Thuilier 2012). La partie adjectivale des syntagmes polydéfinis est un cas de « modification indirecte » (Cinque 2010) et l’emplacement post-nominal est une « post-zone » (Nølke 2001). Parce qu’il est le lieu du focus interne, il a plusieurs fonctions : identification restrictive du référent, contraste, emphase, récapitulation, topic-shift, création de surnoms et « romanisation » des expressions empruntées. Les syntagmes polydéfinis et la place de l’adjectif sont sujets à variation dialectale, diachronique, diagénique et diaphasique en romani d’Albanie. Nous avons constaté qu’un changement de l’ordre des constituants nominaux s’est produit ou est en cours. L'ordre des mots hérité est DEF A N tandis que celui innovant est DEF N A. Les syntagmes polydéfinis DEF N DEF A ont servi d’intermédiaire d’un ordre à l’autre, puisqu’il s’agit d’une structure ancienne mais à adjectif postposé. À l’échelle du romani albanais, on peut dire que la postposition de l’adjectif est devenue majoritaire en tous syntagmes nominaux.
