Korean heritage language learning: Needs analysis
Shin, S-C; Ko, S; Rue, YJ. - : Sotong Publishing, 2019. : Seoul, Korea, 2019
Abstract: This chapter presents the results of a survey study which identifies the needs of Korean heritage language learners in relation to learning (or the prospect of learning) their heritage language and culture. On the survey consisting of questions on (a) language use and maintenance; (b) attitudes and motivation; (c) preferred learning styles; and (d) preferred learning areas, Shin, Ko and Rue find that the primary motive of Korean heritage students for learning or the prospect of learning Korean is to define their ethnic and cultural identity by advancing communications skills and their integrative orientation towards their heritage language is strong. They suggest that more attention should be paid to formal speech and written language skills, and that priority considerations should be given to a modular-based intensive program designed for heritage students and delivered on-campus in-class modes to accommodate heritage students’ heterogeneous nature and preferences.
