Abstract:
According to the generalizations of the use of negative polar questions by English native speakers (Romero, Arnhold, Braun & Domaneschi, 2017) and second language learners (Domaneschi, Romero & Braun, 2017; Bask, 2018), high negative polar questions are appropriate to biased situations under pragmatic conditions; however, the questions are problematic for their syntactic production and pragmatic use, and the misuse of this question type can lead to communication failures. The findings of the aforementioned studies are taken into account for the current study. The study presents the experiment results of the use of high negative polar questions by Thai EFL learners who were doing a Master degree in English Language Teaching at Thammasat University and were highly proficient in English to confirm their pragmatic awareness and linguistic competence.
