In: Langages, N 218, 2, 2020-06-11, pp.125-148 (2020)
; In this paper, we compare the Tough-constructions of two typologically very different languages, Standard Arabic and Bulgarian. We show that despite their morphosyntactic differences, these constructions are based on the same semantic mechanism of double predication that Arab grammarians call the ‹indirect attribution mode›. Moreover, paraphrases by possessive constructions suggest that the deverbal element has to be recognised as a dimension –a very particular abstract part (Van de Velde 2020 in this issue). Finally, we address the question of the ‹source› of the quality denoted by the tough-adjective, by pointing out some differences between the two languages concerning modal adjectives.
