In: World Languages and Cultures (2020)
In this project I have translated a website from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, regarding the use of gender pronouns. In addition to the translation I have explained the reason that it is important to translate this document and provide access to this information to diverse communities. The goal of this project is to promote the use of inclusive language between all types of people. The translation is important because in order to use inclusive language, one has to educate them self on gender pronouns and make an effort to change the way they speak. This document can serve as a resource to people that want to learn more about how to be an ally to the non-binary community, or that want to learn how to express their gender identity in Spanish. The main problem that I wanted to address with this project was finding a way that non-binary people can express themselves in Spanish the same way they do in English, because in comparison to English, when one speaks about them self in Spanish, their gender is usually presented by the descriptive words in their speech. That causes a problem for people that don’t identify as a man or woman because there does not exist a recognized way of describing a non-binary gender, nor a way of speaking with gender neutral language.
