Abstract:
Saint-Preux, dans La Nouvelle Héloïse, et Rousseau narrateur des Confessions y établissent des relations presque exclusivement visuelles avec le monde extérieur: c’est à dire la vue n'est pas uniquement un des cinq sens, mais y demeure la source d'une sensualité déviée qui commence et finit par les yeux. Dans les textes en question, les facultés attribuées à l'œil se trouvent tellement multipliées que celui-ci cesse alors d'être un simple instrument d'appréhension de la réalité tangible. Par conséquent, l'action de regarder--ou d'être regardé par quelqu'un--y dépasse le champ conventionnel de l'optique pour se caractériser surtout en tant qu'activité intellectuelle ou plutôt, au niveau métaphorique, en tant qu'activité sexuelle. On verra que les yeux peuvent donc, en plus de voir, espionner et goûter, toucher et pénétrer jusqu'aux pensées les plus intimes pour enfanter tout un monde à partir de ce contact visuel/virtuel.
