Abstract:
International audience ; AbstractThis study is based on an excerpt from Tennessee William’s 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. The notion of exclamation contains both the idea of exteriorisation (ex-) and intensity (-clamare). Evidence from the context shows that exclamation is a modulation, compatible with most utterances, and giving salience either to a full utterance (enunciative salience) or to an element of an utterance (intra-enunciative salience). This paper also examines the motivation of exclamation: situational or contextual assessment and pre-modal evaluative motivation; inter-enunciative pragmatic motivation; or intra-enunciative motivation in the case of focalisation. The analysis of this corpus of exclamative utterances – apostrophes, interjections, focalisation, injunctions; deontic, optative, assertive, evaluative utterances; exclamative constructions – shows that pluri-modality is very often relevant, and questions definitions of exclamation as an effect of surprise, or of an emotional state, or as the expression of high degree. ; La notion d’exclamation contient à la fois l’idée d’extériorisation (ex-) et d’intensité (-clamare). L'observation de l'exclamation en contexte montre qu'elle se caractérise par un surcroît d’expressivité (intensité énonciative) qui donne de la saillance à un énoncé (saillance énonciative) ou à un fragment d’énoncé (saillance intra-énonciative). L’exclamation est toujours motivée : sa motivation peut se trouver en amont (évaluation), en aval (relation inter-énonciative), et/ou à l’intérieur d’un énoncé (focalisation) ; l’exclamation est compatible avec tout type d’énoncé, comme modulation énonciative marquée qui s’oppose toujours à une variante non exclamative. La prise en compte du contexte remet en question quelques idées reçues, notamment sur l'exclamation définie machinalement comme expression d'une émotion ; ou comme expression d'une surprise ; ou comme expression d'un hiatus par rapport à une attente ; ou comme expression du haut degré ; ou encore sur l'impression de circularité que donnent hors contexte des exclamations anaphoriques (so cute!). Cet article examine aussi la récurrence de la pluri-modalité dans les énoncés exclamatifs. Puis il revient en détail sur les énoncés exclamatifs du corpus, apostrophes, interjections, focalisation ; énoncés injonctifs, déontiques, optatifs, assertifs, appréciatifs ; structures exclamatives.
