Abstract:
International audience ; When designing rooms for speech great attention is paid to the distribution of the early reflections in the binaural impulse response (BRIR), in order to guarantee favorable conditions for speech reception. The delay and the spectral properties of the reflected sounds depend not just on the relative position of speaker and listener but also on the acoustic characteristics of the room boundaries. Besides the influence due to the amount of sound absorption, the quality of reflection can range from specular (flat surface) to diffuse (i.e. scattering surfaces that disperse the reflection both spatially and temporally). A large number of studies have been conducted on the effect of specular reflections on speech reception, but surprisingly little is available on the effect of diffuse ones. This study focuses on the basic conceptual case of a BRIR with a single early reflection, either specular or diffuse, besides the direct sound. BRIRs were measured for several geometries in an anechoic room with a directive source located in front of a head-and-torso simulator; a large surface was placed at the left side of the receiver and set up either as flat (wooden panels) or diffuse (large array of QRD acoustic diffusers). Sound fields were auralized and two speech in noise experiments were presented to normal hearing participants (N=16 for each experiment), using an uncorrelated speech-like spectrum stationary noise as masker at a fixed signal-to-noise ratio of -6 dB. The experiments were designed to investigate the interaction between the quality of reflection (specular vs diffuse) and (i) its temporal delay from the direct sound, (ii) its azimuth. The effects on speech reception are discussed in terms of speech intelligibility, response time and subjective evaluation of the perceived speaker?s characteristics. Objective acoustic parameters (e.g. interaural cross correlation) are also compared for the different experimental conditions.
