Causal Judgments and Omissions ...
Rose, David. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: Our main question is whether young children, 3 to 5 years old, engage in implicit counterfactual reasoning. Previous work suggests that children don’t engage in explicit counterfactual reasoning until 6 to 7 years of age (McCormack et al, 2018). Even though children struggle with explicit counterfactuals before the age of 6, this doesn’t, on its own, mean that they can’t engage in counterfactual reasoning. Appreciating explicit counterfactuals is demanding for a variety of reasons, including that they are linguistically difficult to process. So then how might evidence be provided that children engage in implicit counterfactual reasoning? Our strategy will be to determine whether they view some omissions as causes. Judging that omissions are causes would seem to involve at least an implicit appeal to counterfactuals. If someone fails to prevent an outcome, and could have easily prevented it, it might seem natural to judge their failure to act as a cause of the outcome. If someone fails to prevent an outcome, ...
