Abstract: International audience ; Salience concerns the emergence of a form on a background, the emphasis of an entity over other entities. Being salient means being particularly prominent, to the point of capturing attention and giving a catchphrase, a starting point for getting to know and understanding. This effect, sometimes called "pop-up effect", seems adequate to characterize perceptual and communicative phenomena that are frequent in dialogue, in discourse, in fact with all communication media. Salience becomes a notion involved in many fields of communication study, even when this communication is no longer linguistic or visual, but when it concerns more general phenomena within systems such as semiotic, sociological or economic systems. This article provides an overview of the various disciplinary fields that have developed notion, starting from the original field of visual perception, exploring the subsequent linguistic applications, and emphasizing the interdisciplinary issues raised by the generalization of the notion.
