Abstract:
Different models postulate that lexical competition is a key process of visual word recognition (e.g., Grainger & Jacobs, 1996; McClelland & Rumelhart, 1981). According to these models, the lexical competition arises between multiple lexical representations activated simultaneously by highly similar orthographic input and should be associated with a processing cost. In a masked priming paradigm, the processing cost may appear as a differential effect of the prime depending on its lexical status (i.e., word/nonword). In a lexical decision task, if the target word is primed by a pseudoword differing from the target by a single letter (i.e., its orthographic neighbor, ON, e.g., cassive-MASSIVE in French), the response to the target should be facilitated. This happens because the prime initiates the processing of letters shared between the prime and the target.
