Abstract:
Generic statements are remarkable in that they can be used quite flexibly. "Mosquitoes are insects" refers to all mosquitoes, while "mosquitoes carry malaria" refers to <1%. This implies that their might be significant miscommunication, with strong generic statements indistinguishable from weak generic statements. Recent work indicates that prior knowledge is critical to interpreting generic statements and helps prevent such miscommunication; you are unlikely to think "mosquitoes carry malaria" is meant to apply to all mosquitoes if you have prior experience in being bitten by mosquitoes. But what about when the speaker and listener do not share prior knowledge, as when experts are communicating with novices? This study will examine how novice vs. expert listeners interpret generic statements from expert speakers. ...
