Can we prevent social identity switches? - A linguistic social identity study ...
Zinn, Anna
. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract:
This online study aims to answer the question of how well people can control social identity switches. In a between subject design half of the participants will receive a prompt asking them to try and remain in one specific identity (Preventing Switch condition) while the other half of participants will not receive this prompt (control condition). We will use a validated method to detect salient identities in linguistic style (Koschate, Dickens, Stuart, Naserian, Russo & Levine, 2019) and self-report measure for identity salience to test how well participants can prevent social identity switches. Participants will complete a “three things” activation (Haslam, Oakes, Reynolds & Turner, 1999) of a social identity (parent). In the experimental condition, participants will be asked to try and keep thinking of themselves as parents while the other half of participants will not receive this prompt. Participants will then be asked to write at least 25 words on a topic linked strongly to another identity ...
