Abstract: This project analyzes the perception and categorization of sounds by Spanish and English bilinguals when they believe they are hearing different languages, including a third language that they do not speak. The project will involve highly proficient adult bilinguals who acquired their second language later in life (after the age of 12). The purpose of this study is to examine whether these bilinguals categorize sounds depending upon the language they believe they are hearing, rather than only the specific acoustic properties of those sounds. This phenomenon has been documented in bilinguals and is thought to be modulated by language mode (Casillas & Simonet, 2018).
