Online study of lateralisation of language and literacy processing in monolingual and bilingual adults ...
Harte, Sophie. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: Short summary: This study investigates the impact of reading a logographic first language on lateralisation for a later learnt alphabetic language? Specifically, we will use online behavioural methods to investigate cerebral lateralisation for language and face processing in those who have a native language that is highly dependent on orthographic to phonological mappings (English native speakers) and those who have a logographic native language that might not contain these mappings (Mandarin) but have learned a second alphabetic language (English) (Chinese-English bilinguals). We will study how the strength of lateralization for a number of language and face processing tasks is related to behavioural language tasks such as spelling ability. Extended summary: It is widely accepted that reading is parasitic on spoken language knowledge. That is, the recognition of printed words depends on successful mapping from written word to spoken word representations already stored in a left-lateralised brain network. ...
