: The article discusses the stages in forming the concept of electronic text from hypertext to multimedia (multimodal) text that combines text and graphic material, audio and video content on one page. Its linguistic and didactic capabilities, advantages and difficulties of using it in teaching listening in a foreign language are evaluated. The authors review the main differences that hinder successful listening in Russian in the audience of native Chinese speakers (phonetic, word-formation, lexical, morphological, syntactic, cultural), as well as the advantages that multimodal learning has compared to traditional learning, and the difficulties that it entails. The results of an experimental study aimed at identifying the specifics of perception and understanding of electronic multimodal text in the Chinese audience, which was attended by 60 Chinese students of different profiles and specialties who speak Russian in the range of levels from A2 to C1, are presented. ...
