Honglou meng 紅樓夢 in France : studies, translation and positioning of researchers ; Le Honglou meng 紅樓夢 en France : études, traduction et positionnement des chercheurs

Abstract:
The Honglou meng is considered to be "leader of the four great novels" and a branch specially reserved for this novel: the Redology, which remains unique in Chinese literature. Certainly, it is somewhat surprising that the most popular novel in classical Chinese literature was not published until thirty years after the death of its author. In addition, the work existed in several versions, it is impossible for us to know who is the original. Thus, we can imagine that the dissemination of such a novel is difficult in foreign countries. Tthe first complete French translation was finally completed in 1981 by Li Tche Houa and his wife Jacquelines Alézïas, revised by the famous diplomat André d'Hormon. This translation has before the attention of the public its completion due to an invitation to carry it on the part of UNESCO. Nevertheless, the translation ended up having quite a mixed reception on French territory and this still remains the case today. On the other hand, the novel, in the English-speaking world has been shown to be much more favorable, notably thanks to the full translation of the famous sinologist David Hawkes (1923-2009) and his genre John Monford. The relation between the translation and the reception is reciprocal, thus, the real readers of this novel are rather limited in France, we witnessed a real imbalance between the Redology in France and that in the English-speaking world. It is clear that this Chinese masterpiece is not appreciated at its true value, with regret. This reflection motivates our work, the main objective is being to better understand the state of reception of the original Honglou meng, at present, in order to consider the future prospects in France. ; Le Honglou meng est communément considéré comme étant la plus importante des quatre « grandes œuvres chinoises ». Une branche d’étude est même spécialement réservée à ce roman : le Hongxue (hongologie), qui demeure unique dans la littérature chinoise. Certes, il est quelque peu surprenant que le roman le plus populaire de la littérature classique chinoise n’ait été publié que trente ans après la mort de son auteur. De plus, l’œuvre existant en plusieurs versions, il nous est impossible de savoir laquelle est l’originale. On peut donc imaginer que la diffusion d'un tel roman soit difficile dans des pays étrangers. En France, il faudra attendre 1957 pour voir apparaître une traduction fragmentaire proposée par Armel Guerne (1911-1980), réalisée à partir de la version allemande de Franz Kuhn (1884-1961). La première traduction complète en français fut finalement achevée en 1981 par Li Tche-Houa et sa femme Jacquelines Alézïas, et révisée par le célèbre diplomate André d'Hormon. Cette traduction a attiré l'attention du public bien avant son achèvement en raison d’une invitation à la mener de la part de l'UNESCO. Néanmoins, la traduction a finalement connu une réception assez mitigée sur le territoire français et cela reste toujours le cas aujourd’hui. Par contre, le roman, dans le monde anglophone, a été bien mieux accueilli, notamment grâce à la traduction intégrale du célèbre sinologue David Hawkes (1923-2009) et de son gendre John Monford. La relation entre la traduction et la réception est réciproque, ainsi, les véritables lecteurs de ce roman demeurent assez limités en France. On constate un véritable déséquilibre entre la hongologie en France et celle dans le monde anglophone : force est de constater que ce chef-d’œuvre chinois n’est pas apprécié à sa juste valeur. Cette réflexion motive notre travail, l’objectif principal étant de mieux connaître l'état de la réception du Honglou meng, hier et aujourd’hui, afin d’envisager les perspectives d'avenir en France.
