Abstract: Much research has been done on students’ self-efficacy levels and their achieved learning outcomes. Furthermore, studies have also explored the connection between English learners’ achievement levels and their self-efficacy levels. Though these studies have occurred in a number of countries and settings, less research has been done with adolescent newcomers’ self-efficacy and their perceived English abilities. This study seeks to observe any changes of 12 newcomer high school students’ self-efficacy beliefs about their English abilities throughout the course of a semester. The students speak a number of languages and are from seven countries. A self-efficacy questionnaire will be administered to each student at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the semester to track students’ beliefs. Students will meet with their ELL teacher regularly throughout the semester to discuss and mark off which of the Novice level ACTFL Can-Do Statements the student has achieved so far.
