Abstract:
The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize the experiments of Lupyan and Spivey (2008) and the follow-up study by Klemfuss, Prinzmetal, and Ivry (2012) to examine their findings about the top-down effects of language and linguistic symbols on visual perception. This is our second experiment to that end, and the number of participants given our desired power was calculated through a comparative power analysis between the original study from Lupyan and Spivey (2008), the original replication from Klemfuss, Prinzmetal, and Ivry (2012), and our own first study. The original study (Lupyan & Spivey, 2008) concludes that there are top-down effects of language on visual perception based on the application of linguistic labels to ambiguous symbolic stimuli. The follow-up study (Klemfuss, Prinzmetal, & Ivry, 2012) contradicts that original finding by showing that the presence of a visual cue eliminates the performance enhancement from the linguistic label. Therefore, it is implied that the label affects ...
